International students studying English in the UK

Studying English in the UK is not just about lessons. Every part of the day is a chance to listen, speak and learn. Here's what a typical day looks like for an English language student, and how to make the most of being immersed in the language.

Morning: breakfast and the journey to school

If you stay in a homestay, your day starts with breakfast with your host family. It is a relaxed chance to chat about your plans for the day. Then it's off to school, often by bus or on foot, which means reading signs, timetables and announcements in English.

Lessons: building your skills

Morning lessons usually focus on grammar, vocabulary, speaking, listening, reading and writing. Classes are small, so you get plenty of chances to speak. Because your classmates come from many different countries, English is the only language you all share, so you use it naturally all the time.

Lunch: practice without noticing

Lunch with classmates is one of the best parts of the day. Ordering food, chatting about your weekend and making plans are all real English practice, even if it doesn't feel like studying.

Afternoon: activities and exploring

Many students spend the afternoon on more lessons, self-study or the school's social programme: visits to museums, walking tours, sports and trips to nearby towns. Every outing introduces new vocabulary and new situations.

Evening: life with your host family

Dinner with your host family is a great time to talk about your day, ask about British customs and learn everyday expressions you won't find in a textbook.

Tips to make the most of immersion

  • Say yes to new experiences: every activity is a chance to use English.
  • Don't worry about mistakes: teachers, classmates and hosts expect them and are happy to help.
  • Keep a vocabulary notebook: write down useful phrases you hear each day.
  • Speak English with your classmates, even those who share your first language.
  • Ask questions: people are usually pleased to explain a word or a custom.
