Do you feel nervous before speaking English? Does your mind go blank when someone asks you a question? You're not alone. Language anxiety is very common, even among learners with a good level of English. The good news is that it can be overcome.
Mistakes are a normal and necessary part of learning. Most people are much more interested in what you say than in your grammar.
Begin with low-pressure situations: ordering a coffee, chatting with a classmate, speaking with a patient language partner. Each small success builds confidence for the next challenge.
Have a few phrases ready for difficult moments: Sorry, could you say that again?, What does … mean?, Let me think for a second. Knowing what to say when you don't understand reduces stress a lot.
Talk to yourself in English, describe your day out loud or record yourself. It's great practice with zero pressure.
When you feel nervous, take a breath and speak a little more slowly. Clear, calm speech is easier to understand than fast, nervous speech.
Your goal is to get your message across, not to be perfect. If you can't remember a word, describe it or use a simpler one.
Notice the moments when you managed something new in English, such as your first phone call or a long conversation, and be proud of them.
Small classes and friendly teachers make it much easier to build confidence. At ILC, every lesson includes plenty of speaking practice in a supportive atmosphere. Explore our English courses in the UK.
