Guide for Young Learners at ILC Schools: How to Prepare

October 19, 2026
Young learners at ILC

Many young learners come to an ILC school to enjoy an immersive English course in a historic UK city. Our teachers, staff and homestay hosts will make sure you're well looked after, but it still helps to know what to expect before you arrive. Here are our top tips to help you prepare.

1. Learn some history about the area before you arrive

Every town and city in the UK has a rich history. Reading about yours before you come will expand your vocabulary, make tours and activities more interesting and help you feel at home in local life.

2. Be prepared for British life

You probably know the stereotypes of tea, rain and the royal family, but some things may still surprise you:

  • Traffic drives on the left, so look carefully both ways before crossing the road.
  • Sandwiches are a very popular lunch, especially for students and people at work.
  • The weather can change quickly. Yes, it rains, but there is sunshine too, so bring layers and a waterproof jacket.

3. Don't bring only your nicest clothes

Activities can include anything from outdoor games and sports to painting your own T-shirt, so pack a few clothes you don't mind getting dirty. Your newest white trainers will thank you!

4. Be ready for your first day

Our schools have plenty of stationery, but it's useful to bring:

  • notebooks
  • a good bag
  • a water bottle
  • highlighter pens
  • card or travel games for free time

5. Relax and have a good time

We want you to learn useful English and make the most of your time in the UK, but we also want you to enjoy yourself and remember your trip as an exciting, fun experience. So our final tip is simple: relax and have fun!
