It is opposite one ofthe cities many parks, East Park and is also only 15-minute walk fromone of the biggest parks in the city, The Common. At any time of the day,all over Southampton, you will see people running, jogging, or walking to getin their daily exercise. Every Saturday, at 9am, on The Common, there isPark Run. This is a free, timed 5km run and you can join hundreds,if not thousands, of like-minded people. Just remember to register on theirwebsite first to get a barcode. Join them after the run in the Hawthorn’s Caféor the Cowherds Pub to replace those burnt calories and practise your conversationalEnglish. There are many local running groups in Southampton and holdinga conversation in English whilst running is great practise for mind and body.

Every year, there is the ABP Marathon,held in April or May. Here, you can push yourself to do a 5km, 10km, halfmarathon or even a full marathon. The atmosphere is electric and a great way toimprove your English whilst running is to read the fantastic signs that peoplemake to support you.

If you prefer the slower pace, then the NewForest is only a bus ride away. Here, you can rent out bikes or just walkalong the nature trails, reading the information signs about the wildlife asyou go. This is a great way to improve your reading English and to relax awayfrom the busy city life.

Another great way to practise your Englishin sport is by joining a team sport such as netball or basketball. Here, notonly will your fitness improve but you will meet some amazing people and youwill have to use your English to communicate with your teammates during thegames.

Southampton is a coastal city, which meansthat it is right next to the water, and it also has many rivers so, why not trya water sport such as kayaking, canoeing or even Paddleboarding. There are manyplaces, such as Woodmill activity centre, where you can hire out boatsfor the hour or even the day. Sail along the Itchen River with yourfriends, talking to the people you pass - just don’t forget yourswimsuit.

And with all these options of differentsports, you will need to make sure you are well equipped with all the correctgear and Southampton has just the place for you, Decathlon. Around a 15minute walk from the school is the largest sport shop in Southampton sellingeverything you need from swimming googles to walking boots, if you need it,they have it.

With 49 different adventurous activitiesand attractions, from skiing to paintballing, there is sport for everyone. Thisis great way to keep active not only with you mind and being able to practiseyour English, but for your body too.
