A younglearner is a student aged 11 - 18. Many of them choose to come to an ILC schoolto experience an immersive language learning course in a historic city. The ILCteachers, staff and homestay providers will make sure you’re taken care ofwhile you’re here, but it still helps to have an idea of what to expect beforeyou arrive.
So, hereare a few tips to make sure you’re as prepared as possible for your time in theUK:
1. Learnsome history about the area before you arrive
No matter which town or city you’ll be studying in, it’s likely to have a richand vast history to learn about. Reading up on this history before coming willhelp to expand your vocabulary, make activities and tours more accessible toyou, and allow you to immerse yourself better in local life. It’s also interestingto learn about!
2. Beprepared for the unique aspects of British life
Although many are familiar with the British stereotypes of tea-drinking, badweather and the royal family, some students find themselves surprised by theother lesser-known aspects of British life. For example, the UK is one of thefew countries in the world where people drive on the left of the road, whichcan make crossing the road on foot that little bit more confusing when youfirst arrive.
When it comes to lunchtime, expect sandwiches – and lots of them. While it’snot the only meal British people eat for lunch, it’s definitely a common andpopular option for students and working people, or those who want a quick lunchat home.
Andyes, it does rain a lot in the UK! However, it’s not the only weather we have, and sometimes it can be unpredictable. Depending on when you’re visiting, werecommend a mix of clothing so you’re prepared whatever the weather.
3. Don’tbring *just* your nicest clothes
With that said, whatever clothes you do bring, make sure you bring a few itemswhich you don’t mind getting dirty or messy in some way. Activities can rangefrom an outdoor obstacle course to painting a t-shirt with your own design, sogetting mud or paint on your favourite clothes is a real possibility. Wear yournicest clothes to class or free time if you want to, but we recommend changingthem before starting some activities (your newest white trainers will bethankful!)
4. Makesure you’re ready for your first day
The ILC schools are well-stocked with stationery, but we recommend bringingyour own along with some extras:
- Notebooks or notepads
- A good bag
- A water bottle
- Highlighter pens
- Games (e.g., card games, travel games) for free time
You’llbe provided with an ILC folder, an ILC pen, and an ILC lanyard (for excursions)on your first day.
5. Relax,and have a good time
We want you to learn useful English skills and make the most of your time inthe UK, but we also want you to enjoy yourselves and remember your trip as anexciting and fun experience. So, our final tip is to relax and have fun!
